Oil States Kapler Ltd Fined Following Employee's Accident At Work
1st August 2013
A West Lothian man was seriously injured in an accident at work caused by the failings of Oil States Klaper Ltd, Livingston Sherriff Court heard on July 26th.
The firm pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations in relation to the accident at work claim and was fined £40,000, after Kenneth Hunter sustained life-threatening injuries to his chest and face.
He had been working on an annular, which prevents pressure during oil well drilling, and was tightening jacking bolts, when he was struck by a 400kg metal ring, which hit him in his upper body and propelled him into the air.
The victim of the workplace accident, which occurred on May 25th 2011, required surgery to repair his collarbone and face, and has permanent scars on his face. He was only able to return to work at the beginning of 2013.
Oil States Kapler had failed to heed the advice of health and safety inspectors regarding the dangers of pressure testing, which meant the accident was entirely preventable.
